CONTRACTOR
COMPARISON CHECK LIST.1 ____ 2____ 3____ Does the Company have a permanent business address and phone number? Visit the place of business of your potential contractor. Owning an actual shop is a sign of stability and decreases the risk of the contractor no longer being in business if something goes wrong. You are more apt to get better service if the contractor has an office near you.
1 ____ 2____ 3____ How long has the Company been in business. Longevity is a sign that your Contractor will be in business if something goes wrong down the line; it is also an indication of how much experience they have. The length of time they have been in the business is not the same as how long the Company has been established. Ask about their employees and staff. A company that offers a good work environment and benefits will attract a better employee base.
1 ____ 2____ 3____ Does the Company have a valid business license? A roofing contractor should have an active C-39 license on file from the State Contractors Board. They must also secure a license to do business in each regulatory agency i.e. the city or county you live in. The status of a contractors license can be verified by calling the State Contractors Board at 1-800-321-2752 or on-line at www.cslb.ca.gov
1 ____ 2____ 3____ Is the Contractor bonded and insured? Request to see copies of proof of insurance. If the contractor does not have valid or adequate coverage, you could be responsible for medical expenses for workers injured on the job or have no recourse if something happens to your home as a result of the roofing project. BEWARE OF LOW BIDS; THIS IS FREQUENTLY AN INDICATION OF IMCOMPLETE INSURANCE COVERAGE AND/OR UNSKILLED LABOR.
1 ____ 2____ 3____ Is the Contractor a member of the Better Business Bureau or Roofing Associations? If your potential contractor is a member of the BBB, you can check their standing; this will give you an opportunity to see how the Contractor responds to its clients. Membership in a roofing organization tells you the Contractor is devoted full-time to the profession and increases the likelihood they keep up-to-date with the newest techniques and industry developments.
1 ____ 2____ 3____ Can your potential Contractor provide references? Ask for a list of references the contractor has provided service for; check to see if these references are valid. A good source is to check with realtors and property management companies that oversee numerous projects such as yours. You may want to ask for addresses you can drive by so view projects similar to yours that have been completed by the Contractor or may be in-progress.
1 ____ 2____ 3____ Does your potential Contractor support your community and participate in community events? A reputable Contractor will recognize that the success of the business is dependent on the community it serves. It is a good sign of success, and thus stability, if the Contractor gives back to the community.
